Short Story Competition!

A Punk's Daughter

by Georgia R (Year 8)

For my first day at a new school I tried to make my outfit seem average. There was no dress code which was kind of easy. I looked down at my outfit and knew it was anything but normal. My chequered mini skirt had small rips through it and you could see my fluoro pink fishnet stockings. I also had on a green t-shirt which I thought looked kind of normal but the fluoro yellow tie mum made me wear around my neck made my whole outfit look stupid. I tied back my hair neatly into two plaits aiming to hide the pink tips. I saw the school ahead and my eyes widened and my heart started to beat loudly.

“Dad? You can just drop me here, it’s a nice day I can walk the rest.’ I smiled.

‘Nah way, sweets, it’s your first day of school, I’ll drop you out the front!’ He smiled his huge smile, teeth missing and all. ‘Go on, don’t be shy darl, enjoy it!’ He waved to some of the students and they looked at him alarmed and ran into the school. I got out of the car and about half the students were staring at me and giving me nasty looks. But I didn’t blame them who wouldn’t stare at a dirty white car, which had a bald man inside with half his teeth missing and a loud heavy metal song blasting out the windows.

I walked into class a bit late and smiled at the teacher. She gasped and gave me a slight smile.

‘Okay class this is… what’s your name dear?

“Willow, um, Hardcore.” I mumbled and lowered my gaze. The class snickered and I felt my face burn. The whole lesson people kept whispering and staring at me just because of my stupid outfit I felt like a freak. Someone tapped my shoulder and I turned around to face a young boy, he had massive long eyelashes and spiky brown hair. He smiled at me and handed me a note.

‘Hey meet me at the bus stop after school.’

I wrote back.

‘Fine, who are you?’

I was about to pass it back when the teacher called out my name.

‘What do you think your doing?’ She yelled.

‘To detention with you!’ She handed me a note and sent me straight to detention. I looked back and nodded at the boy. I thought to myself she’s just probably trying to figure out a reason to get rid of me.

I waited in detention all day staring at the wall. It felt like forever so I laid my head down on the table waiting for the final bell. When it rang I quickly ran out of the classroom to the bus stop waiting for the boy with the long eyelashes. It started to pour rain and some girls walked past calling me names like ‘Little punk. Freak. Loser.’ I sat down on the chair and tried to hide my eyes from watering up.

‘Hey! Willow? Right?’ The boy with the long eyelashes smiled down at me and offered a hand.

‘What do you want with me? Do you have a  dare with your mates to ask me out?’ I stood up and glared at him.

‘No’ His face fell and he looked a little hurt. ‘I just wanted to talk to you and maybe walk you home?’

‘Sure.’ I decided to give him a chance and I started to walk towards my house.

‘You know, you should just ignore those people, I think your outfit is pretty cool.’

‘You don’t have to say that, it’s horrible, my parents refuse to buy me normal clothes, only these.’

‘I still think it’s cool. I saw everyone talking about you today, and I know what that’s like, trust me I block it out these days. You know tomorrow you should just ignore them and maybe even give them a scare that would teach all those plastic girls.’ I laughed for the first time today.

‘ My house is just down this street. I’ll see you tomorrow yeah?’

‘Sure.’ I continued walking towards my street and I could here loud music coming from somewhere. Oh no, not again. Loud heavy metal music was coming from my house blasting through the windows.

My parents were in the garage again singing and playing instruments. Ronnie and Rysa were also in there jamming. I got to my house and looked around; gosh if anyone ever came to my house they would run and scream. A big tall pine tree was infested with bats, we had a random fridge laying in the yard, along with worn out tires and a trailer that we have never used. I pushed the door open and  Stewart was barking wildly and snapping at a fly.

‘Hey Stewart boy.’ I pet him and stepped around the messy kitchen making my way to my room. My mum walked in asking me if I wanted a drink. Her green hair was down to her back and she had about 20 piercing’s all over her face. She was wearing big black boots and tiny ripped shorts.

‘No thanks mum.’ She shut my door and I cringed at the thought of someone coming over here. I must have fallen asleep because I woke to Stewart licking my face.
I looked in my closet and the only clean clothes were my Metallica concert t-shirt and my green chequered baggy pants. I sighed and put them on.

I let out my hair as wild as it could go and put on black make up around my eyes. I even put on a fake lip ring to look scarier. I opened the door and there stood long eye lashed boy but not as I knew him, he was wearing  three quarter ripped jeans, a ripped jean jacket and a guns and roses t-shirt. I knew this day was going to be great. I laughed and we started to walk to school.
